We take a look at some of the week 1 standouts in central Texas. It was a very impressive start of the season, to say the least for the Texas High School Football season. Let’s dive right into which players made an impact in your area.

Offensive MVPs

Stony Point has plenty of weapons offensively and looked very dangerous in their first outing in the 69-27 victory over Copperas Cove. One player who stood out the most was a senior wide receiver and athlete Jaden Leonard(6’0″, 170). Jaden could be a breakout player from the Round Rock area this season. He’s a tremendous athlete who is flying under the radar right now with no FBS offers. He can do it all, showed some quick feet at the line of scrimmage and in his routes. Jaden could have a strong senior campaign and possibly turn up his recruitment in his senior season.

Another standout from the game that everyone should know about is running back and athlete Cameron Cook. Cook was very explosive out of the backfield and was easily one of the fastest players on the field. He was able to pile up 194 yards rushing, on 12 carries with 2 rushing touchdowns, 84 yards receiving, and two more touchdowns bringing his total to 4 touchdowns on the night. This is a special player who is also a great hands catcher out of the backfield and shows elite patience and vision running the ball.

Of course, none of their success on offense for Cook and Leonard wouldn’t have come without the help of quarterback Ivan Villegas who notably had 214 yards passing and 4 touchdowns on the night.

Defensive MVPs

On defense one player who impressed me the most was edge defender Adam Whitfield who got after the QB all night long. Whitefield has adequate size, long arms, and a lean athletic build for a defensive end at 6’2″ 195. He is explosive off the ball and can beat blockers with his speed and his hand moves off the edge. Definitely one recruit to keep your eye on this season.

Some other notables on defense were defensive-end and linebacker Jacob Morales with 8.5 tackles and .5 sack and also Lukas Morin who had 6.5 tackles, 2 TFLs, and 1 sack on the night.

Stony point looks to keep their winning streak alive as they face Austin Bowie next week. At Copperas Cove they will look to rebound their start of the season against Georgetown.
