The Washington Huskies received a Texas-based verbal commitment on Friday, and it was a big one. Anthony James, a 2023 four-star defensive tackle, committed to the Washington Huskies over offers from Utah, Auburn, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Houston, Illinois, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Oklahoma State Oregon SMU TCU Texas and Texas Tech.

James was a former Texas A&M commit who reopened his recruitment a month ago. James is a big get for Washington and Head Coach Kalen DeBoer as they continue to recruit at a high level despite having just one season under their belt. Landing James adds more talent and depth to an already strong defensive line unit that includes some possible NFL talents.

Anthony has a smooth gait with a decent get-off the LOS that shows some explosion and quickness. For a big guy, he’s got above-average with his ability of change of direction. When taking on blockers, he uses his length and wingspan to his benefit rather than letting them enter into his body. Shows promise in terms of effort and ability to chase plays down. He has a good pad level as he comes off the ball, and he is eager to engage with the offensive lineman. His punch on his opponent will be more effective as he gets bigger; it’s a good sign that he uses his hands effectively now.
