Top 10 Texas College Football Ranking: After Week 9

By:

Since the completion of Week 9, no team in Texas stands undefeated. After Texas’s defeat to Georgia (15-30), they dropped from 1st to 5th in the AP Top 25 Rankings. This begs the question: how does Texas match up compared to other Universities in Texas? Here’s a look into the current Top 10 Universities in Texas College Football after Week 9.

1. Texas Longhorns (7-1 Overall, 3-1 Conference) Win Against #25 Vanderbilt

Texas is extremely explosive on both offense and defense, recording 23 TDs and 20 Sacks so far this season. The Longhorns have picked up major wins this season against ranked opponents, such as their win against #10 Michigan (31-12), and their shutout victory against #18 Oklahoma during The Red River Rivalry Game (34-3). Their most recent victory against #25 Vanderbilt (27-24) this week, creates a perfect environment for Texas to continue their dominance over The SEC.

2. Texas A&M Aggies 7-1 Overall, 5-0 Conference) Win Against #8 LSU

The season for the Aggies started in a rough spot, losing to #7 Notre Dame (13-23). Since that defeat, the Aggies have been on a 7 game win streak, led by their star RB Le’Veon Moss, currently holding 757 YDs with 10 TDs for the year. Their best victories this season are from #9 Missouri (41-10), and against #8 LSU (38-23). Currently, they are on a great path towards their last game against #6 Texas.

3. SMU Mustangs (7-1 Overall, 4-0 Conference) Win Against Duke

Being SMU’s first season in the ACC, they’ve been incredibly successful in their campaign. Their only defeat comes from BYU (15-18), however they’ve gained crucial wins such as against #22 Louisville (34-27) and TCU (66-42). The Mustangs are led by their star QB Kevin Jennings, who recorded almost 1,600 YDs and 10 TDs with 5 INTs. Their most recent victory against this week against Duke in Overtime (28-27), comes right before their biggest challenge of the season against #18 Pittsburgh.

4. TCU Horned Frogs (5-3 Overall, 3-2 Conference) Win Against Texas Tech

The Horned Frogs have been extremely efficient with the support of their QB Josh Hoover, currently having 2,614 YDs and 19 TDs with 8 INTs. Crucial victories for them include their wins against Utah (13-7), and this week against Texas Tech (35-34). These wins indicate that TCU is definitely going to face challenges this season, however their biggest is next week against Baylor, in The BlueBonnet Battle.

5. Texas Tech Red Raiders (5-3 Overall, 3-2 Conference) Loss to TCU

The Red Raiders are led by their QB in Behren Morton, recording 2,063 YDs and 17 TDs with 3 INTs. Their star RB Tahj Brooks has also been fantastic for them, holding 925 YDs and 9 TDs. Unfortunately, their luck within the state of Texas has been rather poor, losing to both Baylor (35-59) and TCU (34-35). Hopefully they continue to rise as they face #11 Iowa State next week.

6. North Texas Mean Green (5-3 Overall, 2-2 Conference) Loss to Tulane

North Texas had a great amount of success early, winning against South Alabama (52-38) during their first game of the season. 7. Sam Houston Bearkats (6-2 Overall, 3-1 Conference) Win Against FIU

This team has bounced back incredibly well from a 3-9 season last year during their first year at FBS. Due to their Fast-Running offense, they’ve maintained a great record in Conference USA and gained Bowl Eligibility in their 2nd season at FBS. They’re biggest victories came against Texas State (40-39) and Rice (34-14). Next week, they face a conference foe in Louisiana Tech.

8. Baylor Bears (4-4 Overall, 2-3 Conference) Win Against Oklahoma State

They’ve been most competitive in the last 2 weeks, defeating both Texas Tech (59-35) and Oklahoma State (38-28). Most importantly, they found ways to improve from 3-9 last year, and are in good momentum to defeat TCU next week.

9. Texas State Bobcats (4-3 Overall, 2-1 Conference) Loss to Old Dominion

The Bobcats have an explosive offense this year, led by QB Jordan McCloud, recording 1,891 YDs and 20 TDs with 7 INTs. 10. Houston Cougars (3-5 Overall, 2-3 Conference) Win Against Utah

The Cougars had a very slow start to the season, losing to #15 Oklahoma (12-16), not scoring any points in 2 games against #18 Iowa State (0-20) and Cincinnati (0-34). With that being said, their development the past few weeks has been impressive, gaining key victories against TCU (30-19) and Utah (17-14).  Next week, they have a challenge against #17 Kansas State.
