We kick the week off by taking a look at some of the top prospects in the transfer portal here in Texas at the current moment. Some have already or are going to make their commitment very recently. We all know how the transfer portal has shaken things up a bit in the world of recruiting for both college and high school athletes.
Nonetheless, these prospects at the college level deserve a spotlight also and coaches are always looking to fulfill their respective team’s needs. Let’s dive right into who some of the top prospects are who are either still available or have made their commitment.
Brian Merrit (21) | 6’0″ 290 | DL | Houston
Brian was a three-star prospect coming out of Colquitt County HS (GA). He was ranked as the 14th ranked D-linemen in the state and 64th nationally. Merrit is a little undersized as a defensive lineman however he shows a good burst off the line of scrimmage and can shed blockers to make a play on the ball. He can plug up that defensive line, shed his blockers, and moves well to the ball showing a good pursuit to the ball carrier. I think Merrit could be a contributor on someones defensive line,
Elijah Blades (19) | 6’2″ 185 | DB | Texas A&M
Elijah definitely passes the eye test. This DB from Pasadena, Califonia has a long lengthy frame, long arms, and athletic looking. He’s a big-time hitter and not afraid to come up and lay the wood on defenders. Going back to his high school tape Blades could play against the run and pass very well and be absolutely lockdown. He showed he could also play press coverage and get his head around to make a play on the ball. I think Blades will be a special player where ever he ends up.

Atanza Vongorv (18) | 6’1″ 200 | DB | TCU
Atanza was a four-star athlete out of South Grand Prairie HS (TX). Ranked NO.16th at the safety position in the nation and rated by ESPN as the NO. 5 safety in Texas. His college career hasn’t really gone the way he or others would have thought it would but he still has time to re-write his story. He’s got dangerous speed and agility which translates to his terrific pursuit to the ball carrier. He can trail receivers and shows great awareness out there on the field.
Slow feet don’t eat! ? Still in the portal! 6’1, 200lbs, 4.45 40. & 3 more years of eligibility! come get me! pic.twitter.com/b9ci82Q990

Christian Gelov (20) | 5’11” 170 | QB | TCU
Christian is a bit undersized as a quarterback and wasn’t highly recruited coming out of high school. However, this QB showed some beautiful footwork in the pocket and could keep his eyes downfield to make a play with a receiver. He showed an amazing deep ball and pinpoint accuracy throwing in the pocket or on the run. I think this is an underrated QB who could be special.
Darwin Barlow (19) | 5’11” 195 | RB | TCU
TCU former running back finally made his commitment and he is taking his talents to Southern California to play for the Trojans at TCU. The former three-star running back should be an immediate contributor and help the Trojans add some points to the scoreboard.
