We kick off with a look at Texas high school football in 5A-Division I play. Here are some of the top teams and recruits to know. Stay tuned as we preview the rest of 5A and 6A football here in the state.
Region I
Chapin High School (El Paso, Tx) –
Chapin were district champs last season and first in the district last with a win/loss record of 9-3. Their team looks strong this season with more starters returning. Some notable recruits for the Huskies are first-team all-district senior wide-out Anthony Rivera, senior running back Richuel Massey, sophomore Brent Hallman Jr. , 6-foot-4 286 lbs senior defensive tackle Eduardo Licon. Look for the Huskies to defend their district title this year and put on a strong performance this season.
Region 2
Lubbock-Cooper High School(Lubbock,Tx) –
The Pirates took first place last season in district play with a perfect 5-0 record. The team’s overall record was 13-2 and the Pirates were able to make it far into the Texas high school football playoffs last season with a shot at a state title but fell short to a talented team out of Dallas in South Oak Cliff. The offense was a large part of Cooper’s success last season as most of their final scores against opponents went for 40(+) plus points on multiple occasions. Some noteworthy recruits and players to know this fall for Lubbock Cooper are junior tight end Sam Marcinkowski, senior defensive back Keon Piepkorn, senior interior offensive lineman John Braden-Fenter, senior defensive lineman Ty Politte, and senior defensive middle linebacker Cutter Douglas to name a few.
Region 3
Denton Ryan High School (Denton, Tx)–
Denton Ryan brings back a wealth of talent on both sides of the football but more in particular on the defensive side of the ball which is where the Raiders dominate the most. Offensively Ryan returns a few starts to note like senior quarterback Khalon Davis, star senior running back Kalib Hicks, senior interior offensive lineman Kolt De La Torre, junior defensive linemen Tre Bates, senior defensive lineman MarQuice Hill, and of course their anchor and star on defense, and the top-rated recruits at any position in the nation in 5-star linebacker and recent Texas A&M Aggies commit Anthony Hill jr. With all of this talent on the field on both sides of the ball, Denton Ryan has a high probability of success this season in District play and at a shot at another 5A D-I state title.
Region 4
Mansfield Summit (Arlington, Tx) –
The Jaguars and Colleyville Heritage were neck and neck last season. Summit had a 7-1 record in district play and went 11-4 on the season taking first place in the district. One notable player to watch for this fall on the team for the Jaguars is junior 6-foot-3 quarterback Joseph Williams who could very well be a breakout player for them this season.
