Since Steve Sarkisian arrived in Austin Texas he and his coaches have been attempting to change the culture at the University of Texas. For many, the tide began to change for the former Alabama offensive coordinator when he landed 5-star transfer QB Quinn Ewers and was later able to secure commitment from star receiver Xavier Worthy after reports of NIL offers to lure him away from the 40 acres.
However, Sark made another big move this offseason completely changing the outlook on the future of the Longhorns with the verbal commitment of the number one player in the class of 2023 Arch Manning. Texas will now look forward to having two 5-star quarterbacks on the roster and 4-star QB Maalik Murphy in the coming years.
Since Manning committed to play for UT several top-notch prospects, including four offensive linemen and 4-star receiver Jonah Wilson, have all committed to the Longhorns. Even though most of the attention has been on the offensive side of the ball the Texas defense has also secured some notable commitments over the last few days.
Derek Williams is a 6’2 185-pound, 5-star safety from the class of 2023. The lengthy DB plays similar to the new mantra of the team, “All gas no breaks.” Agile, quick, and fast he has it all and is joining linebacker Liona Lefau and edge Billy Walton. There is an opportunity for all of these players to make a big impact on a Texas defense that gave up an average of over 31 points per game.
There is still a long time until the class of 23 is set in stone and even longer before they arrive on campus but it seems that Sark and Arch Manning have made Austin a popular landing spot for recruits from all across the country. There is still a lot of work to do in order to improve on UT’s 5-7 season but if the Longhorns are as good on the field as they are on paper we could see their return to prominence sooner rather than later.
